DESCRIPTION:Join us for a welcoming\, hands-on community cooking class exploring the heart of Turkey’s plant-based cuisine at Made in Hackney. This free session is open to everyone and offers a relaxed\, supportive space to learn new skills\, share food\, and connect with others. \nTogether\, you’ll learn to prepare a variety of traditional Turkish-inspired dishes using fresh\, plant-based ingredients. With guidance from our chef Ada\, you’ll explore the rich flavours of Mediterranean Turkey and discover simple ways to bring the warmth of Turkish hospitality into your own kitchen. From vibrant salads to comforting stews and sweet treats\, this class is perfect for anyone who wants to build confidence in cooking\, try something new\, and enjoy good food in a community setting. \nAbout the Teacher: \nAda\, originally from Finike\, a picturesque town in the Mediterranean region of Turkey\, brings her passion for food and culture to the class. Before moving to England five years ago with her girlfriend\, Ada had a successful career in TV and radio. A year ago\, Ada and her girlfriend welcomed their beloved cat\, Ruby\, into their lives\, adding to the joy they share together. Ada also enjoys cat sitting locally and has a special affection for caring for both animals and people. \nWith a deep love for nature\, Ada often forages and harvests edible plants to incorporate into her recipes. As the youngest of five in a large family\, Ada learned how to cook from her mother and her mother’s friends\, growing up in a home where hospitality was a central value\, reflecting the essence of Turkish culture. \n———————————– \nCancellation Policy \nAs a small charity with limited spaces\, we ask that you cancel at least 48 hours in advance if you can’t attend a free community class\, so we can offer your spot to someone else. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice are considered late cancellations\, and missing a class without notice is a no-show. If you have three or more late cancellations or no-shows within 12 months\, unfortunately we will not be able to book you in for classes for 6 months. However\, if you have questions or need to discuss your attendance\, please email us at classes@madeinhackney.org. Thank you for helping us make the most of our free community resources and ensure we can reach as many people as possible. \nLate-Comers Policy \nPlease aim to arrive at least 5 minutes before the class to settle in comfortably. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging\, hands-on workshop that explores sustainable gardening practices and helps you build confidence in growing your own food. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned gardener\, you’ll gain valuable insights\, practical techniques\, and easy-to-follow guidance for cultivating healthy plants in an eco-friendly way. \nTogether\, we will be sowing seasonal seeds such as tomatoes\, peppers\, and lettuces\, learning about soil health\, composting\, watering methods\, and how to care for seedlings as they grow. You’ll leave with the knowledge and confidence to continue your gardening journey at home\, no matter how much space you have. All growing materials and plant-based light refreshment are provided. \n\nPLEASE NOTE: This class is for adults only. Please sign up to the family session if you wish to come with your children.\n\n\nAbout the Facilitator\nFounder of The Barefoot Planter\, Chauntelle Lewis delivers sustainable solutions through gardening workshops\, cooking classes\, and dining experiences. Together\, we’ll prepare a full vegan feast that reflects the rich food culture of the region\, moving from bright\, zesty starters to hearty mains and sweet endings. Along the way\, you’ll hear stories behind each dish\, pick up family tips\, and discover how these recipes bring people together around the table. \n🌿 Sample Menu (subject to change): \nPita: Freshly-made pillowy flatbreads\, perfect for scooping\, dipping\, and sharing—an essential on the Levantine table. \nTamar Hindi: A refreshing\, tangy-sweet drink made from tamarind\, traditionally enjoyed across the Levant as the perfect balance to rich\, savoury dishes. \nFattoush (Lebanon): A bright and crunchy salad of crisp toasted bread\, fresh vegetables\, and a tangy sumac dressing—a dish that turns simple ingredients into something special. \nMutabbal (Syria): Smoky roasted aubergine blended with tahini and lemon\, creating a creamy\, flavour-packed dip that’s a staple of every Syrian table. \nMaqluba (Palestine): A stunning upside-down rice dish layered with spiced vegetables and toasted nuts\, made for sharing at celebrations and gatherings. \nBaklawa (Across the Levant): Flaky pastry filled with nuts and drizzled with fragrant syrup—this a classic dessert shared during festive occasions. \nAllergens: Tree nuts\, sesame\, gluten \nAbout the Chef \nOmama Zankawan is the founder of Omama’s Kitchen\, where she shares the rich\, comforting flavours of Syrian and Levantine cuisine. Inspired by her mother’s home cooking and her hometown of Homs\, she creates dishes that bring people together through warmth\, storytelling\, and generosity. \nHer cooking celebrates simple\, seasonal ingredients—fresh herbs\, vegetables\, and spices—alongside cherished family recipes and modern twists. While rooted in Syrian traditions\, her menus reflect the shared food culture of the wider Levant. \nOmama is a graduate of the Food Power programme at The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network and a recipient of the Food Power Street Food Showcase Award and Kerb’s Streets Ahead Grant.
