ABOUT US

Made In Hackney is the community cookery school building a global plant-based movement. We believe in the transformative power of plant-centered eating to heal both people and the planet.

Since we first fired up our hobs in 2012, we have inspired and upskilled over half a million people to grow, cook and eat more plants – and we’ve only just got started.

“A dedicated collective who’ve been teaching their community to put more on veg on their plate for over a decade.”

Jamie Oliver – Celebrity Chef

Our cookery school HQ is located on the beautiful Clapton Commons in Hackney but we deliver sessions in kitchens across London, nationally and online to a global audience.

Our vision

Made In Hackney believes in a world where…

Everyone has access to enough health-supporting, nutritious food of their preference.
Plant-centered eating is the norm, not the exception.
Equitable food systems support healthy eco-systems that allow people, planet and animals to thrive
Everything we do strives to make this vision a reality.

Our mission

To reduce health inequalities, increase access to climate-friendly food and bring communities together using the power of plants.

How do we do this?

We inspire & educate

In our Community Cookery School we inspire people to grow, cook and eat more plants. Our online and in-person classes showcase budget-conscious, nutritious, culturally diverse, planet-friendly food. We offer free community classes; and charged masterclasses and team building sessions.

We offer support & care

In our Community Made sessions we provide a supported space for people to batch cook meals for themselves and the wider community. We work with marginalised groups to ensure no one is left behind in the transition to a climate-friendly food system.

We train & change

Our Plant Prospects programme offers consultancy and training to civil society, businesses and healthcare to inspire changes to menus, food policy and culture to go more plant-based.

We build a movement

Our Global Plant Kitchens programme offers training and mentorship to collectives to build an international movement of plant-based community kitchens.

We strive to do all this with joy, respect and collaboration

Our food culture

To reduce health inequalities, increase access to climate-friendly food and bring communities together using the power of plants.

Our pandemic response

In 2020 we made headlines with our COVID19 response Community Meal service. Within a week of lockdown we launched an emergency food support programme delivering meals to 500 households a day across Hackney. This intervention was planned for three months but we delivered it for three years before evolving it to our current Community Made programme. Watch the video about the Community Meal Service.
