Sevy

Sevy started her Made In Hackney journey in 2017 attending our community cookery classes and courses. When she retired she joined us as a volunteer class host.

“My mother never taught me to cook when I was young. Probably because we had to cook on a paraffin stove or a coal fire and she didn’t want me to burn myself. When I’m volunteering it gives me a sense of satisfaction. I like doing the work because I hate doing my own housework as it feels never ending. At MIH I am able to do the work and then it’s over and I don’t have to think about it later that day. Also we work as a team whereas I am on my own at home doing everything. At MIH I learn new things that I can impart to my son. Like soaking the rice for at least half an hour. Same with the lentils. Because it is good for flatulence and makes it quicker to cook. I have learned to preserve vegetables and I sometimes make kimchi. The classes have inspired me to eat more vegetables and I have learned to use cabbage a bit more. Next I need to focus on using less meat. Sometimes after a class it feels like I’ve got a new understanding of other people and their difficulties. I can be depressed sometimes and the classes really lift my spirits.”
