Elderberry Juice

Elderberry juice and syrup is traditionally used to ward off coughs and colds in the autumn. They are packed full of anti, oxidants and vitamins A, B and C , and they are free! Make sure you pick them when they are drooping on the plant , that means they are ripe.

  1. 1: Remove the elderberries from their stalks with a fork

    2: Wash the elderberries in a bowl of water, taking out any under ripe berries

    3: Place the berries in a large heavy based pan with enough water to cover them

    4: Bring the berries to the boil then turn off the heat and let them stand for 3 hours or overnight

    5: Strain off the juice and keep it in the fridge.

    It will keep for a week

    For treating colds and flu warm the juice in a saucepan with lemon juice. Drink twice a day.

    Elderberry juice can also be drunk as a cordial diluted with water and mixed with lemon and sweet freedom (or other healthier sweetener alternative) to taste.
