Chocolate hummus

Chocolate hummus

Try this chocolatey, protein rich treat and decorate with your favourite berries for a healthy bit of indulgence.

Ingredients

  • 1 tin of black beans (You can use 1 1/2 tins of any dark beans you have, but with black beans it looks more chocolatey)
  • 1/2 tin of chickpeas
  • 50g cocoa powder (add slightly more or less depending how chocolatey you like it)
  • 1/4 cup of sweetener (we recommend date syrup, brown sugar or coconut sugar)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract or orange extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Method

1. Add the beans to a blender, keeping the liquid (aquafaba) aside.
2. Add your chosen sweetener.
Start blending, adding the liquid (aquafaba) bit by bit.
3. Blend until almost smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides, as needed.
4. Add the cocoa powder and blend a bit more.
5. Taste and add more sweetener if needed.
6 Now you have a pretty thick spread. If you prefer to thin it out, add more aquafaba by the tablespoon or if needed add cold water. (Hot water will split the spread).
7. Add your chosen extract one tablespoon at a time to your taste.
8. Finish with a pinch of sea salt to balance the flavour.
9. If you want your spread to be extra shiny, add up to 1/4 tablespoon of coconut oil or peanut butter to get this effect; however this is not needed.

You can store your chocolate hummus in a jar or tupperware, in the fridge for up to 3 days.
