Families in Bali have been brewing this ancient turmeric tonic, for more than 5,000 years. Not only is it said to keep your health problems at bay, it's also known as the 'love potion'...
4 thumb-sized pieces of fresh turmeric, peeled and grated
A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated
1 tablespoon tamarind paste or the pulp from 2 whole tamarind
500ml filtered or mineral water
2–3 tablespoons, maple syrup or coconut palm sugar
A pinch of ground pepper (black or cubeb)
1. Blend the turmeric, ginger and tamarind with the water either in a food-processor or with a stick blender. Alternatively, pound everything to a paste and let it infuse for 30 minutes.
2. Strain though muslin into a sterilised jar. Sweeten to taste with honey, maple syrup or coconut palm sugar and stir in a pinch of pepper. Drink straight away or chill. It will keep in the fridge for up to 1 week.
