As we celebrate Trustees Week, we are thrilled to shine a light on the invaluable work of our Made in Hackney trustees. These dedicated individuals bring expertise, passion, and vision to our mission, playing a vital role in our impact. This week, we’re delighted to share the story of one such trustee, Jenny Chu, who has been a cornerstone of our organisation for over three years. Here, Jenny reflects on why she became a trustee and monthly donor what drives her commitment to our work.
Jenny’s journey to Made in Hackney spans continents. Originally from the Bay Area in California, Jenny’s early career took her from advising brands on energy efficiency to leading global decarbonisation initiatives for hard-to-abate sectors. Today, as a Senior Advisor at Tilt Collective, a food and climate philanthropy, Jenny leverages her expertise to build international movements promoting plant-rich diets for planetary and human health.
Why did you become a MIH Trustee?
"I became a trustee because MIH connects food, climate, and community in deeply meaningful ways," says Jenny. As a global climate advocate, her work has always focused on big-picture solutions that create sustainable change. Made in Hackney’s approach struck her as both inspiring and essential, blending nutritious food access with a mission to promote plant-based diets and environmental sustainability.
For Jenny, being a trustee is about putting this global knowledge into local action. “Made in Hackney’s mission resonates deeply with my work in climate and food systems,” she explains. “It’s an opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives right here in London, helping them access nourishing food while supporting sustainable practices.”
What is one of your favourite projects?
“My favourite project is Made in Hackney’s meal service, Community Made. This service is a lifeline to those most in need, offering nourishing, delicious meals cooked with love,” she says. “It’s staggering that in a country with enough food for everyone, 8 million people still go hungry daily. This service brings comfort and sustenance to hundreds every week, embodying Made in Hackney’s mission to create equitable access to food.”
“Made in Hackney’s Crowdfunder appeal is currently live, and every donation brings us closer to our goal of providing meals to community members struggling with both their health and financial wellbeing. As a Made in hackney donor, Jenny emphasises, this work wouldn’t be possible without supporters like you.
If you could envision Made In Hackney’s future to be?
Jenny’s vision for Made in Hackney’s future is ambitious. “I’m hopeful that we can deepen our reach across London and inspire thousands more people to eat more plants. This is just the beginning.”
“If you’re passionate about creating greener, healthier, and more equitable communities, consider becoming a trustee. It’s an opportunity to make a profound difference.”
