Made in Hackney (MIH) is seeking an experienced, values-driven Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and play a pivotal role in guiding the charity’s financial strategy, governance, and long-term sustainability.

Working closely with the Chair, Executive Director, and Finance team, the Treasurer will provide objective, independent financial oversight, ensure robust governance, and help shape the organisation’s strategic direction as we continue to deliver life-changing food education and community programmes.

The Role

As Treasurer, you will:

  • Provide strategic financial leadership and governance, ensuring MIH remains financially sustainable and compliant with all regulatory obligations.

  • Act as the Board’s lead on financial strategy, interpreting and communicating complex financial information for fellow Trustees, and contributing to major organisational decisions.

  • Guide and oversee the preparation of annual budgets, management accounts, and audited statements, ensuring transparency, accountability, and alignment with MIH’s mission and values.

  • Monitor financial controls and processes. Championing continuous improvement in financial systems, risk management, reserves, and investment policies.

  • Offer constructive challenge and strategic insight to the leadership team, ensuring resources are used effectively to deliver MIH’s charitable objectives.

  • Be an active member of the Finance, Resource and Remuneration Sub-Committee, providing expert input on financial planning, staff remuneration, and resource allocation.

  • Contribute to the fundraising strategy of the organisation and help ensure fundraising targets are aligned to the overall purpose of the charity and its agreed strategy.

  • Lead the preparation and submission of annual reporting (Year end, 31st October) to the Charity Commission, ensuring compliance with the current Charities SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice)

This is a governance-level role that combines financial expertise with trustee responsibility for overall organisational direction, impact, and resilience.

We expect all MIH Trustees to: 

  • commit to the charities aims, principles and values, including principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

  • think creatively and strategically, exercise good, sound, independent judgement and work effectively and with diplomacy as a member of our proactive and passionate board

  • actively contribute in giving strategic direction to the organisation, reviewing policies, goals, and targets, and evaluating performance

  • support our dynamic MIH team to think through ideas, problem solve and provide constructive challenge when needed

  • contribute to the work of the organisation by sharing skills, contacts, experience and new perspectives

  • safeguard the charity’s reputation and protect its ability to deliver its core mission

About you

  • We are looking for a senior finance, audit, or accountancy professional—ideally with experience in the charity or not-for-profit sector—who brings both technical rigour and a passion for community-driven impact.

    You will have:

  • a professional accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, or equivalent).

  • significant experience in financial management, audit, or corporate governance.

  • ideally, experience of charity finance (e.g., Charities SORP), fundraising strategy, and/or impact reporting.

  • an ability to analyse financial data and communicate financial insights clearly to a non-financial audience.

  • sound judgement, integrity, and a commitment to the principles of equity, inclusion, and sustainability.

  • an ability to think strategically, capable of balancing detail with the bigger picture

  • An understanding of the voluntary sector and previous board or trustee experience is desirable but not essential. We welcome applications from first-time Trustees with the right skills and commitment.

Hours, Remuneration and Time Commitment

Tenure: Voluntary role, 3 year term / commitment 

Expenses: reasonable travel expenses reimbursed

Onboarding

  • In-person induction meeting with key team members

  • Time to review induction documentation to fully understand the role and expectations of a Charity Trustee, attending additional training if considered necessary

Ongoing Support: 

  • Attendance at quarterly Board meetings, at least 1 per year in-person (held in the evenings)

  • Attendance at an annual in-person strategic planning meeting 

  • Approximately 4-10 hours a month (reading papers, attending meetings/contributing to Sub Committees, overseeing Annual Report preparation and submission)

  • Active engagement with the Charity’s work, including attendance at at least one MIH event per year

Location

Made in Hackney is based at Liberty Hall (E5 9AA). Board Meetings are usually held in Central London or online.
